The aircraft, a 21-year-old Boeing 767-300ER was en route to Zurich when it suffered technical issues over the Atlantic, it was subsequently decided by the crew to declare an emergency and divert to Shannon, Ireland. While at the time of the accident it was reported as a technical issue it was later revealed by The Clare Herald that the cause for the incident was a fan blade separation from the right-side (number 2) engine, it was also reported that the fan blades may have struck the aircraft right elevator as well.

There were 113 passengers and ten crew aboard the aircraft. It was unable to continue its journey to Zurich, passengers were given free meal vouchers and hotel accommodations while the airline made arrangements to continue their journey.

In a statement United Airlines said:

“We are providing our customers with meal vouchers and hotel accommodation and making arrangements for them to complete their journeys.”

Though airline hasn’t given an official statement on the technical issue behind the diversion, one passenger said in a tweet that the aircraft was forced to make a single-engine landing further supporting The Clare Herald’s report.
